We are pleased to offer a new feature at Family History Day at the California State Archives - the Archives and Libraries Panel and the Internet Resources Panel.
Archives and Libraries Panels
Learn why Archivists and Librarians are a genealogist's best friends at this panel presentation. Representatives from a variety of local archives and libraries will provide an overview of their repository, its holdings, services to genealogists, tips and tricks for using, and more. Topics such as the following will be addressed: types of holdings and collections; accessing online, in writing or in person; and finding aids. Learn that using the specific repositories represented in this session can be generally applied to repositories in your ancestral locations. There will be a question and answer period during this session.
Panelists will include Linda Johnson and Jessica Herrick, California State Archives; Kathleen Correia, California State Library; Pat Johnson, Center for Sacramento History; Gloria Gibbel, Daughters of the American Revolution; Linda Lucky, Sacramento Family History Center; and Beth Daugherty, Sacramento Public Library.
Online Resources Panels
The Internet has been a boon for conducting family history research. Is everything you need on the Internet? Is it all true? Learn the answers to these questions from panel members who have expertise with a broad spectrum of Internet resources available for genealogical research and have personally lectured on the subject. They will address such topics as databases and search engines; what’s online and what’s not; fact and fiction online; free vs fee-based websites; alternate sources for subscription websites; message boards; finding databases to search - tips and tricks for queries on search engines; and more. There will be a question and answer period during this session.
Panelists will include Lynn Brown; Joy Fisher; Melinda Kashuba; Cat Nielsen; Cath Madden Trindle; and Sheri Fenley.
Each panel will have a morning and afternoon session. Panelists are subject to change.

Exhibitor Profile: Yolo County Archives
| Old Hall of Records, Woodland, CA |
The Yolo County Archives facility is 2,525 square feet. It contains a public reading room, a workroom and a secure storage area containing 15 ft. metal shelving. The collection consists of more than 4,300 volumes and 1,880 boxes. The Archives is the official repository of the historical records of the county from 1850 forward. The Archives also houses private collections relating to the history of the county and we are the only historical institution in the county that accepts records created after 1950.
The official records of the County of Yolo consist of department records in ledger, deed book and oversize formats, boxed folders and files, as well as blueprints, maps, drawings, and photographs. There is also a small amount of tapes, both audio and visual, and some microfiche. Private collections include a newspaper collection, approximately 6000 photographs, negatives and slides. Ephemera, scrap books, school year books, business ledgers, and posters make up the rest of the collection. We have a small reference library as well as a collection of over 33,000 alphabetized obituaries. There is a Guide to the Archives and we are embarking on a project to catalog our holdings.
On February 18, 1850, Yolo became one of the first 27 counties of California. The Archives houses the complete records of the minutes of the governing body of the county from its very first meeting on June 6, 1850 through 2000. This very significant series of records documenting the governance of the county and its impact on the people who live here is supported by other Board of Supervisors and County Clerk series such as Articles of Agreement 1854-1867; Articles of Incorporation 1853-1979; Bills of Sale 1852-1923; Board of Equalization Records 1872-1979; Cemetery Deeds 1909-1932; Chattel & Crop Mortgages 1857-1928; Coroner’s Reports 1860-1967 [some gaps];Grand Jury Reports 1869-2008; Mining Claims 1850-1929; Powers of Attorney 1852-1934; School records; Treasurer Reports. Our court records are quite complete and all the records all start in 1850, with a few probates documenting deaths from 1849. The probates go through to the mid 1980’s and the collection is used extensively especially by genealogists.
We accept family records which usually consist of photographs, some biographical information, family bibles, and service records. Many local residents are descendants of Pioneer families like the Snowball family, whose manuscript collection documents the lives of the descendants of William Knight on the female side.
Stop by our exhibit at Family History Day and let's talk about how we can help with your family history research needs.

Exhibitor Profile: Daughters of the Utah Pioneers
| Slough House Pioneer Cemetery Gravesite |
The DUP is an association devoted to preserving the legacy of those pioneers who came to the State of Deseret before the railroad in May 1869. More than 60,000 pioneers traveled in more than 300 companies to find their place in the west. The objective of DUP is to perpetuate the names and achievements of those men, women and children by preserving old landmarks, marking historical places and collecting artifacts and histories. The headquarters for ISDUP is located at the Pioneer Memorial Museum, 300 North Main Street, Salt Lake City, Utah. The website address is www.dupinternational.org.
The State of Deseret covered much more than the present-day state of Utah and, in fact, covered much of southern California. Some of these Mormon pioneers first settled in California before relocating to Utah. Locally, the Slough House Pioneer Cemetery is the burial spot for many of the Sacramento pioneers with tombstones dating from the 1850‘s. It is owned by the ISDUP and maintained by the many companies and camps in the Sacramento area.
Members meet monthly in camps to learn more about and share pioneer histories and artifacts. Camps and Companies are organized in geographical areas.
Visit our exhibit at Family History Day to see pictures and newspaper articles about the Slough House Cemetery and other local DUP historical markers. We plan to have internet access available for visitors to search the indexes listed below. (The actual photos and histories are not available for viewing online, only the indexes.) We will also have a book display of other DUP publications that can be purchased online.
- Photo index - The photo department houses, maintains and preserves a collection of over 25,000 images of pioneers, their homes, communities, organizations and artifacts. Copies of photo prints or CD images can be ordered and purchased online.
- History Card Index - The history department presently has over 100,000 pioneer histories on file of pioneers who came to the geographic area covered by the Utah Territory/ State of Deseret. It also includes those who died crossing the plains and those born in the Utah Territory before May 10, 1869 and some locality histories.
- Pioneer Pathways Index - Volumes 1 through 11 consolidated index - Each year DUP sponsors the publication of historical material which has been used as lesson material in the camps. At the present time, there have been 5 multi-volume sets of books published. Pioneer Pathways is the latest of them.

Speaker Profiles: Gwen Myers and Cat Nielsen
It's a pleasure to welcome Gwen Myers and Cat Nielsen as speakers at Family History Day at the California State Archives.
Gwen Strong-Myers was born, raised, married and raised her family in the South Bay area of California. She is a second generation Californian – her father’s family arrived in 1890. She received her BS in Nursing at UCLA.
Gwen's interest in genealogy, unbeknownst to her at the time, began when an aunt asked her six other Swanson siblings to write a short history of each of their families. Her aunt wrote about the early days living in Aurora/Homestead, WI before the family moved to Kingsburg, CA.
After moving to Roseville in 1999, Gwen started attending the Sun City Roseville Genealogy meetings and became fascinated with her and her husband’s family histories. She became the Genealogical and Historical Council of Sacramento Valley representative for the group and participated in the organization of the 2004 National Genealogical Society (NGS) Conference held in Sacramento. She has since joined the Roseville Genealogical Society. Gwen is now the president of the Genealogical and Historical Council of Sacramento Valley where she also represents the Sun City Roseville group and the Roseville Genealogical Society.
Cat Nielsen's interest in genealogy began in 1970 when she met a branch of her Danish family that was not supposed to exist. Cat has a BA in Geology, an MBA in Marketing and Science and Technology Management, and a Project Management Professional certification. She took advantage of her extensive business travel throughout the U.S. and Europe to continue her genealogy and family history research. Cat is past president of the Contra Costa County Genealogical Society and a member of NGS, California Genealogical Society, several other local societies and the Association of Professional Genealogists. She is currently webmaster for the California State Genealogical Alliance website and blog.
Gwen Myers and Cat Nielsen will be co-presenting Genealogy Research is As Close as Your Local Genealogy Society. This presentation will introduce the attendee to the many resources found at local genealogy societies throughout the state and nation. The benefits of belonging to a local society are numerous and will be discussed. Societies located in the Sacramento and Northern California area will be explored.

Sacramento German Genealogy Society, Exhibitor at Family History Day
Please welcome the Sacramento German Genealogy Society (SGGS) as an exhibitor at Family History Day 2012 at the California State Archives. The SGGS was founded in 1983 to promote the search for family histories of those who have a German heritage. It provides educational resources for those seeking to learn how to research their German ancestry and seeks to increase the public’s understanding of the cultural history of life in the German-speaking areas of Europe and the United States.
Benefits: SGGS holds week-day monthly lectures featuring local and out-of-town German genealogy experts. At those meetings attendees can purchase German genealogy research books, maps and tools. Attendees can also browse member pedigree charts, use the books in the SGGS library, discuss research problems with volunteers at the help desk and engage in a question/answer discussion with local experts or the featured speaker.
SGGS also runs a monthly workshop, weekly mentor sessions, an annual seminar and occasional special events. The monthly workshop is a small-group meeting where you can discuss your research problems with the experts leading the meeting and the other attendees. The mentor sessions occur every Thursday afternoon at the Sacramento Regional Family History Center where volunteer mentors will provide personal assistance in the use of that research facility.
The annual seminar is an all-day Saturday event with lectures from one or two out-of-the-area speakers. SGGS occasionally hosts special events such as its 25th anniversary which featured local German folk dancers and singers. The monthly meetings are free and open to the public. The annual seminar and special events are fee-based.
In addition to meetings, SGGS also provides a number of services such as an informational website, a list of approved German translators (fee), surname queries and customized handshake packets. SGGS volunteers create useful publications that are subsequently sold to meeting attendees. These include a reference catalog to the German resources available at the Sacramento Regional Family History Center and a comprehensive index for all of the Der Blumenbaum journals (since 1984).
Program 2012-13: You are invited to join us at our monthly meetings. Guests are always welcome. Check out our Website for the 2012-13 programs and our Der Bote (monthly newsletter). We will also have the schedule at the SGGS exhibitor table.
Seminar 2013: Our annual Spring conference will feature Roger P Minert, A.G., Ph. D. as our main presenter. A brochure/registration form is available at the SGGS exhibitor table at Family History Day and after the conference see our website.
Membership: The membership year is 1 July – 30 June. Dues: Domestic: Individual $30; Couple $35. Foreign: Individual $35; Couple $40.
