Where can I park? Parking options include Light Rail; the free parking lot across from the State Archives; a free parking lot on P Street between 11th and 12th Streets; and metered street parking. Read the details for each option.
Is the State Archives and the Secretary of State buildings handicapped accessible? Yes.
What time does FHD start? Doors open at 8:00am for Class Syllabus payment and pick-up. The 4th floor exhibitor area will open at 8:30am. The welcome and keynote will begin at 9:00am in the auditorium.
How can I get a Class Syllabus? Reserve your syllabus by sending an email to email@example.com. Distribution will be in the lobby of the State Archives until 9:45a.m. after which a copy may be obtained at the Reference Desk on the 4th floor of the State Archives. In the lobby, there will be a table for reserved syllabi and a table for non-reserved syllabi.
How much does the Class Syllabus cost? $5.00, exact change please, cash only, at the door.
Can I get a Class Syllabus if I arrive late? Yes. Starting about 9:45a.m., go to the volunteer at the State Archives 4th floor Reference Desk to obtain the Class Syllabus.
Can I get a Class Syllabus even if I am unable to attend FHD? Yes. Please send an email for firstname.lastname@example.org indicating you can't attend but want a syllabus. Arrangements will be made for payment and getting it to you.
Do I need to register for the classes I want to attend? No. Go directly to the classes you wish to attend. Seating is first come, first serve. When all chairs in the room are occupied, the session will be closed.
Where can I get a Class Schedule? The class schedule is posted on the FHD blog under the tab "Class Schedule". The most current version of the class schedule will be handed out on October 13th in the State Archives lobby with syllabus distribution.
Will a map be provided showing how to get from the State Archives classrooms to the Secretary of State classrooms? Yes. Volunteers will also be stationed at various locations to direct attendees to classrooms.
Where do I sign-up for tours? Each Mini Tour of the State Archives is limited to 20 people. This tour is popular; it is suggested that you sign-up in the morning for your desired tour time. Tours of the Preservation Lab will meet on the 3rd floor of the State Archives.
Can I wear my period costume? Yes. Many exhibitors and volunteers will be dressed in period attire. Doing so adds to the festivities!
Can I bring food and drink into the State Archives and Secretary of State buildings? No. All beverages and food must be consumed on the first floor of the State Archives or outside. Beverages include water, coffee, tea, soda pop, etc. Food includes candy. A drinking fountain is located on the 4th floor of the State Archives.
Where can I get something to eat or drink? La Bou Cafe will be open especially for FHD attendees. We encourage you to patronize them. Located at 11th and "O" Streets, La Bou Cafe will be open from 9:00a.m. to 2:00p.m. on Saturday, October 13th. Pastries, sandwiches, soups and beverages are available for ordering. Indoor and outdoor seating is available. Tables and chairs are available but limited in the lobby of the State Archives where you can eat your La Bou Cafe lunch or bring a brown bag lunch instead. Remember that no food or beverages can go beyond the first floor of the State Archives.
Who should I go to for questions throughout the day? Volunteers wearing bright green "Ask Me" buttons will be available in the State Archives and the Secretary of State buildings to answer your questions or get the answer for you.
Will any materials be available for purchase? Yes. Some exhibitors will have books or indexes available for purchase. Your purchases will benefit non-profit organizations.
Can I bring information I have about an ancestor? Yes. Pedigree charts and family groups sheets would be helpful to refer to when talking to exhibitors. Some exhibitors will have laptops for internet look-ups.
Will The California Museum be open on FHD? Yes. The California Museum will offer free admission to FHD participants on Oct 13th only. Tickets will be available at the State Archives 4th Floor Reception Desk. Tickets must be turned in at the Museum Admissions Window in the lobby of the State Archives next to the Gift Store BEFORE entering the Museum (same floor). The gift store will be open also. Both will open at 10:00a.m.
Where do I put my completed FHD Evaluation Form? A box labeled "Evaluation Forms" will be located on the table near the elevator in the 1st floor lobby of the State Archives. You may also give the form to a volunteer wearing an "Ask Me" button.
